Iris Moiwo, an ECOWAS volunteer English teacher, undertook a project at Services Secondary School, Juba Barracks. The main aim of the initiative is to raise awareness amongst pupils about the vital importance of planting trees in their communities. The project emphasises the collective responsibility we all share in caring for and safeguarding these valuable natural resources for the well-being of both staff and pupils at the school. The project also aims to instil a sense of environmental awareness and responsibility in the students’ young minds. By raising their awareness of the importance of tree planting, the volunteer hopes to contribute to the wider ecological health of the community, as well as to address SDG Goal 13 on combating climate change. In a commendable show of support, key figures such as school authorities, members of the school nature club and other stakeholders actively took part in the event. Mrs Aissatou, the EVP French teacher, in support of her colleague, took the opportunity to deliver an insightful talk on the importance of volunteering. Her words served to emphasise the value of selfless service and community engagement, further enhancing the overall impact of the project. The event not only served as a platform for sharing vital environmental knowledge but also fostered a sense of community spirit and shared responsibility amongst the school’s stakeholders. This holistic approach to education, encompassing both academic and environmental awareness, reflects a commendable effort by the ECOWAS volunteer to make a lasting positive impact on the school community and, by extension, the wider local ecosystem.
