Presentation of the ECOWAS Permanent Representation in Burkina Faso, the WAHO support project in Burkina Faso and the ECOWAS Centre for Youth and Sports Development As part of the programme for this retreat, participants attended lectures on ECOWAS in Burkina Faso and the projects being implemented for the welfare of the population. ECOWAS is present in Burkina Faso through several agencies and institutions, including its Permanent Representation. Within the institutional and diplomatic framework of the ECOWAS Commission, the Permanent Representation was established by Decision A/DEC9/2014 of the 44th Conference of Heads of State and Government held on 28 and 29 March 2014. In ECOWAS member states, it helps to strengthen the institution’s presence and visibility. As part of this effort, it fosters relations between the host state and ECOWAS institutions. It also acts as an interface between the various national and international stakeholders and ECOWAS agencies for the promotion, ownership and implementation of the regional agenda. Burkina Faso is also home to the headquarters of the West African Health Organisation (OOAS). The OOAS contributes to the development of health policy in West Africa and supports member states in improving their health systems. As part of the project to support ECOWAS member states, Burkina Faso received 596 million CFA francs. 147 million were disbursed in January 2024 to support the Ministry of Health in the fight against the dengue epidemic. The ECOWAS Centre for Youth and Sports Development, headquartered in Burkina Faso, is a specialised agency of the Commission that implements its policies in the fields of sport, youth and volunteering. Volunteering was established by ECOWAS to enable young people to get involved in community development policies, conflict prevention and management.
