A review of best practices in the fight against Covid by volunteers

ECOWAS member states have been affected to varying degrees by the COVID-19 pandemic. The contexts also vary. Some countries have faced security crises, whilst others are in a relatively peaceful situation. The standard of healthcare services also varies significantly. However, in general, the types of volunteers who have been involved and are currently involved in the fight against epidemics are: • Field (onsite) volunteers: These include occasional, short-term, medium-term and long-term volunteers. They may or may not be specialists. • Online volunteers: These can be an effective solution to support the fight against epidemics as they can work remotely thanks to new information and communication technologies. Areas of intervention include: raising awareness, providing care, testing and vaccination, etc.), logistics (ambulance services, transport of equipment, vaccines and medical supplies, etc.), water and sanitation (disinfection of sites and homes), mobilisation of resources, production of face masks and preparation of disinfectant solutions, support for people in quarantine, etc.
