The ECOWAS Centre for Youth and Sports Development organised the third edition of the ECOWAS International Marathon in Abuja on Saturday, a major sporting event aimed at promoting regional integration and showcasing West Africa’s sporting talent. This year’s event brought together runners from ECOWAS member states, as well as other countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia, China, England and the Netherlands, reflecting the competition’s growing international recognition. More than 3,500 athletes took part in the event, making this edition one of the most popular to date. The marathon was divided into two categories: a 5 km race and a 21 km half-marathon reserved for elite runners. This initiative is part of ECOWAS’s commitment to promoting sporting excellence, whilst strengthening the bonds of friendship between the peoples of the region. The winners in the various categories were awarded medals and cash prizes in recognition of their outstanding performances. Special prizes were also awarded to the best male and female runners from ECOWAS member states. This year’s event is of particular significance, coinciding with the celebration of ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary, marking 50 years of commitment to unity, development and regional cooperation. Through this event, ECOWAS reaffirms its commitment to making sport a driver of social cohesion, a vehicle for cultural exchange and a springboard for young talent, thereby consolidating its role in African integration. The ceremony was attended by several delegations and officials from Nigeria and ECOWAS, including Malam Shehu Dikko, Minister and Chair of the Nigerian Sports Commission; the Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, Her Excellency Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr; the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalisation, Her Excellency Sediko Douka; and the Director of the ECOWAS Centre for Youth and Sports Development, His Excellency Francis Chuks Njoguani.
