ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS TO THE ECOWAS VOLUNTEERING PROGRAMME, SIERRA LEONE.

Date: 22 April 2024.

Becoming a doctor is a dream shared by many, particularly those studying science subjects in Koidu City, Kono District, Sierra Leone. Ten years ago, we attended one of the best schools in the district, which was among the hardest hit during the 11-year civil war. The war destroyed almost all the infrastructure, leaving every school in the municipality without a functioning chemistry laboratory. There were no qualified chemistry teachers either.

It was at the height of these challenges that the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme deployed Ms Elumeze Ngozi Angela, a basic science teacher from Nigeria. Ms Angela (as she is affectionately known) began offering her services to our school in June 2013. Thanks to her excellent teaching skills and motherly qualities, she became a source of motivation for every pupil. The first cohort of pupils she prepared for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) saw their pass rate in Chemistry rise from less than 10 per cent to over 90 per cent.

Thanks to her dedication and many unspoken sacrifices, this ECOWAS volunteer ensured that we, along with many other students, gained entry to our country’s only medical school, and she remained in constant contact with us. Eight years later, we are proud to announce that the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme in Sierra Leone has produced its first cohort of doctors in Sierra Leone: I, Momoh, Moses (left), graduated as the top student, whilst Sandy, Solomon Fallah Foa (right), is amongst the top three. The ECOWAS Volunteer Programme (EVP) in Sierra Leone has also produced many other successful students in various fields and disciplines as a result of its work.

On behalf of all beneficiaries, we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the EVP and its team for their remarkable work in Sierra Leone. We hope to continue making the programme proud of us all.

Long live EVP!
